One Ilocos Sur

Ilocos Sur, a province located in the Ilocos Region of the Philippines, is known for its vibrant festivals that showcase the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the Ilocano people. One of the most famous festivals in Ilocos Sur after the "Viva Vigan Binatbatan Festival of the Arts" is the “Kannawidan Festival”.  Last January 28, 2024, Governor Jerry Singson led the opening of Ilocos Sur Festival 2024. Ilocos Sur Festival is the Kannawidan festival before.

Street Dancing and Parades: A highlight of the festival is the colorful street dancing competition where participants dressed in vibrant costumes perform traditional dances along the streets of Vigan City. Spectators can enjoy the lively music, intricate choreography, and elaborate costumes during these performances.

Trade Fairs and Food Festivals: Visitors can also enjoy trade fairs and food festivals during the Ilocos Sur Festival. Local artisans and entrepreneurs showcase their products, including handicrafts, textiles, and delicacies, providing an opportunity for both locals and tourists to experience the flavors and crafts of the region.

The crowd flooded Quirino Stadium during the first ever Illumina Fest as one of the highlights of this year's Ilocos Sur Festival 2024.

Started with a zumba and fun run joined by thousands of residents in the province followed by a cosplay competition showcasing the creativity and talent of cosplayers in Ilocos Sur.

Meanwhile, the crowd went wild as they sing and dance during the performance of DJ Carla Cray, Al James, Autotelic, Janine TeƱoso, The Itchyworms and Juan Karlos. As a finale, the crowd were stunned by a spectacular fireworks display that illuminated the stadium.

Vigan City Fiesta

The Vigan City Fiesta is held every January 25. It is celebrated during the feast day of the conversion of St. Paul the Apostle. St. Paul is Vigan City’s patron saint. Before his conversion, St. Paul was known as Saul, a zealous persecutor of Christians. After he was touched by a personal encounter with Jesus Christ on his way to Damascus, his name was changed to Paul and he endured a lot of hardships and danger to spread the word of God to far places.

Vigan’s main church, the Metropolitan Cathedral is dedicated to St. Paul and it stands at the core of the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia. The major Catholic educational institution in Vigan that stands beside the church is also dedicated to the patron, the St. Paul College of Ilocos Sur. The Vigan City Fiesta usually lasts for several days. It includes within the period the celebration of the anniversary of the cityhood of Vigan, which is commemorated every January 27.

Biguenos from all over the country and even abroad return to Vigan, as it is the custom of Filipinos to return to their hometown to join their family and friends in the celebration of their fiesta. They are joined by thousands of visitors from other parts of the Philippines and other countries in enjoying the cultural shows, parades and street dancing prepared by the local government with the help of the local industries and communities. There are also food fairs, arts and crafts exhibits, as well as a visiting carnival.

Participants from the different neighboring provinces in the northern region are also sent to compete in the various games and activities, particularly the street dancing competition. This participation by other municipalities makes the Vigan City Fiesta not only a local event participated in by Vigan’s officials, but a national event participated in by other local public heads and national officials. Within the Vigan City Fiesta days, the Longganisa Festival is also celebrated. The city has a longganisa-themed parade and at one time attempted to set a record for having the longest longganisa ever made. The festival has become a crowd-drawer as Vigan longganisa, a native version of Mexican salami, has a distinct garlicky taste that has become a favorite of the Filipino palate. Though other manufacturers have tried to copy the Vigan longganisa taste, they have not been successful. Biguenos attribute this to the fact that the making of Vigan longganisa is a centuries-old tradition of the local makers and all if not most of the ingredients used in making the native sausage is sourced from Vigan. Vigan’s garlic and sugarcane vinegar are said to be more strongly flavorful. It’s a great take-home gift after partaking in a Vigan City Fiesta.

Contributions of Rizal

Jose Rizal wrote El Filibusterismo and Noli Me Tangere, which paved the way for a Filipino uprising against Spain.

His novels and writing are the only which opened the eyes of all filipino and gave them the bravenes to strive against.

J. R. was an intellectual. He pushed for reforms and freedom via the pen.

Rizal intellectual is only pushing reforms but not to liberate the filipinos from freedom or self governing, he just want liberal reforms but still the Philippines will be under the spanish rule at that time. Not like Andres Bonifacio, whose idea is total freedom for the filipino, but for the Aguinaldo, he is the true color of our present political system, hunger for the power itself and not caring for the people.

Rizal wrote a manifesto that expressed his disapproval of the armed revolution against Spain. He said that he has always opposed, fought, and made clear that armed revolution was impossible, absurd, and disastrous. He explained that reforms must "also come from above," because reforms that "come from below are upheavals both violent and transitory."

He emphasized, however, that like any Filipino, he desired our country's freedom; and that education and hard work might make the Filipino people worthy of that freedom. Elsewhere, Rizal wrote: "What is the use of independence if the slaves of today will be the tyrants of tomorrow? And no doubt they will, because whoever submits to tyranny loves it!" For Rizal, "The gift of reason with which we are endowed must be brightened and utilized" in order to overcome ignorance which causes slavery."

When the Philippine Islands was under the oppressive rule of the Spaniards, his brilliance and dedication to his country served as inspiration for his fellow filipino men to fight for their homeland's independence.

Rizal did have thoughts of eventual independence, but never through violent means. He sacrificed his life for the freedom of our country and became a good example of true nationalism. That's the reason why he is the greatest Filipino hero ever lived.

He led the Philippine Independence by fighting for reforms through writings instead of a bloody revolution. Reform Movement has became an indirect way to our country's freedom. His novels and writings opened the eyes of the Filipino people and brought up a new idea called Filipinism. He didn't use aggression because it will only invoke a revolution through bloody means. He fought passively and proved that "The pen is mightier than the sword". He was able to use his intelligence to set forth his beliefs and opinions clearly.

He believed that our freedom can be achieved or can be won without using force, and declaring war against our colonists. He also believed that the children are our hope, that the children will be the one who will seek and fight for our freedom like the way he did.

He is great because he never used force in fighting the colonists, he used his

knowledge and wisdom to fight them and let them know his feelings.

Dr. Jose Rizal was never afraid to expose the wrong deeds of the colonists, even when he was already captured and was imprisoned; he never stopped fighting for our freedom and proving that we can do something to gain the respect we deserve. He prove that we can achieve our goals through perseverance and use our wisdom and knowledge as our foundation.

He was able to awakened the mind of the people. Even if the Filipinos were scared to fight greedy Spaniards, Rizal helped us through his faith that we can conquer the Spaniards. He influenced most of our revolutionary leaders through his writings and articles. Most people believed that Rizal's greatest legacy is his love for his country as embodied in his writings and the actions that he took.

He accomplished so much in such a short period of time because he had a vision in his mind and a mission in his heart. The intensity of such mission and vision translated into action that enabled him not to waste time in any trivial matters but rather devote all of his time to the accomplishment of the mission and vision that he believed was given to him.

I salute Rizal for he had faced death with boldness. He had proven the saying goes, " A PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD.

Through his works, he wakes the sleeping spirits of Filipinos that physical fighting is the only way to fight for our independence. He showed that without killing another man we can win. He also demonstrated how the power of the pen could be stronger than the sword. He also showed how someone could bring about change without resorting to violence instead of using one s knowledge.

One of the many reasons why Jose Rizal is the national hero of the Philippines is because he looked far beyond overthrowing the Spaniards. He was more interested in the long situation of the country after over throwing Spaniards in our country. This only shows that Rizal is controlled enough to balance his eagerness to be free for Spaniards and his visuals after being free from the colonizers.

The most important thing that Rizal contributed to every Filipino is his story. A story that tells us that every one of us must be a good man or a good citizen so that we can help our country to progress. He fought for freedom in a silent but powerful way. He used his intelligence, talents and skills in a more peaceful way rather than the aggressive way.

He also used his outstanding intelligence and patriotic character; so he may be able to free his fellowmen from the wickedness of the dreadful Spanish government.
He started the change for revolution, and although not the advocate, he still paid the
ultimate price; death, even without making rousing speeches or bold declarations, he was able to stir the people's inner spirit.

He also showed how someone could bring about change without resorting to violence.

The Katipunan led a full scale revolutionary war against the Spanish colonial government.

Celebrating the New Year is a cultural phenomenon that transcends borders, languages, and traditions. It is a momentous event celebrated globally, albeit with diverse customs and rituals. Regardless of the approach, the essence remains the same—a collective acknowledgment of the passage of time and a collective optimism for the days ahead.

The concept of New Year celebrations dates back thousands of years, deeply rooted in history and culture. Many civilizations marked the arrival of the New Year with rituals and ceremonies, often tied to the cycles of nature or significant astronomical events.  Every family celebrates Christmas uniquely, incorporating their own traditions and customs. How your family celebrates Christmas can depend on various factors like cultural background, personal preferences, and cherished family rituals. Here are some common ways families celebrate:

Decorations: Families often decorate their homes with Christmas trees, lights, ornaments, wreaths, and other festive decor. Some families might have specific traditions regarding when they put up decorations – it could be a particular date or an event that kicks off the holiday season.

Family Gatherings: Many families prioritize spending time together during Christmas. It might involve extended family members coming together for a special meal, exchanging gifts, sharing stories, and playing games.

Special Meals: Christmas often involves preparing and enjoying special meals and treats. Families might have traditional dishes that are unique to their culture or recipes that have been passed down through generations. The Christmas meal, often held on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, can be a significant part of the celebration.

Gift Exchanges: Gift-giving is a common tradition in many families. Some families might exchange gifts on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, often placing emphasis on thoughtful and meaningful presents.

Religious Observances: For families with religious beliefs, attending church services or engaging in specific religious customs and rituals related to the birth of Jesus Christ might be an essential part of their Christmas celebration.

Volunteering and Giving Back: Some families incorporate giving back to the community as part of their Christmas celebration. This could involve volunteering at shelters, donating to charity, participating in food drives, or helping those in need.

Holiday Activities: Families may engage in various holiday activities together, such as watching Christmas movies, singing carols, baking cookies, creating DIY crafts, or going on outings to see Christmas lights and displays.

Creating New Traditions: Families sometimes develop their unique traditions that hold special meaning for them. It could be anything from creating a holiday scrapbook, making a specific ornament each year, or participating in an annual charity event.

Your family's way of celebrating Christmas can be a blend of these or entirely unique. What matters most is the joy, togetherness, and the spirit of giving and sharing that the holiday season brings for your family.

1st Quarter Reflection

Throughout this first quarter in ICT 10, I have gained numerous learning discoveries. I have learned about the timeline of the internet, the pioneers who have made significant contributions to its development, and the basics of creating and managing a web page and blog. I have also discovered how the internet has revolutionized communication, information sharing, and business operations.

The main challenge I have encountered is the technical aspect of creating and managing a web page and blog. Understanding how internet revolutionized and other web development languages has been a steep learning curve for me. Additionally, I have found it challenging to consistently come up with engaging and relevant content for my blog.

To address these challenges, I have dedicated extra time to practice and study web development languages. I have also sought assistance from my instructor and classmates when I encounter difficulties. For the content creation challenge, I have started planning and outlining my blog posts in advance to ensure that I have a consistent flow of ideas.

Moving on, I will continue to expand my knowledge and skills in web development and blogging. I will also strive to produce high-quality content for my blog and actively engage with my audience. Additionally, I aim to explore new and innovative ways to incorporate ICT into various aspects of my life and future career. Overall, I am excited to continue my journey in ICT 10 and further enhance my understanding of the digital world.
